What It Means To Be a Christian (Part 5)

April 14, 2022

“If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

This week we have been looking at the six elements of understanding that one must have in order to know what it means to be a genuine Christian. First, one must understand that God is the sovereign creator. Second, one must understand that God is holy and third one must understand that we are not holy. In fact, the Bible tells us that mankind is sinful. Fourth, one must understand that sin demands a penalty, and that penalty is death.

The fifth thing we must understand is that Jesus is Lord and Savior. Romans 10:9 says that “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord.” This means that you verbally confess this but also that you live your life in such a way as to give evidence that Jesus is indeed the Lord of your life. You also must understand that there is only one savior and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 10:9 continues, “and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Even though God’s justice demands death for sin, His love has provided a Savior who paid the penalty and died for sinners. 1 Peter 3:18 says, “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.” Christ’s death on the cross satisfied the demands of God’s holiness. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” Jesus’ death on the cross enables God to forgive us and to save those who place their faith in Jesus Christ.

As we continue our preparation for Resurrection Sunday let us focus today on the reality that Jesus is our Lord. He rules over our lives, and we owe Him our obedience, and honor. He is also the only salvation hope that mankind has. With thankful hearts let us dwell on these thoughts today.
